Montie gang writes a letter to Mahama

Montie FM 3 gangs which comprises of  presenter Salifu Maase, aka, ‘Mugabe’ and panelists Alistair Nelson and Godwin Ako Gunn, who have been jailed by the Supreme Court for four months for contempt, have however petitioned President John Mahama for a presidential pardon,(Montie gang writes a letter to Mahama) it has been reported.

In a letter sent to the president on their behalf by their lawyers, they called on him to exercise his prerogative of mercy on them, according to a report by classfmonline.com.

It comes after the lawyers, Nana Ato Dazie and George Loh, described the sentence as

“harsh and excessive”, stressing that Ghanaians must not be committed to prison for infractions on free expression especially in light of the repeal of the criminal libel law.

“Our clients have directed us in the circumstances to petition his excellency the president of the republic to exercise his powers of prerogative of mercy under Article 72 of the constitution of Ghana”, they said in a statement.

 

They had reportedly threatened to kill judges who ruled that the Electoral Commission should delete the names of 53,000 NHIS cards registrants from the voters register.

 

The court also found the owners of the station guilty of contempt and fined them GH¢60, 000, to be paid by close of day on Thursday or face a jail term of one month.
