The president of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo has extended the free electricity and free water for the next 3 months. The free utility was given by the president of Ghana in March and was to last to June 2020.
However, the Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, presenting the government’s mid-year budget review in Parliament today, 23rd July has extended the freebie.
It has now been extended from June to September. Meaning another 3-month increment in free water and free electricity.
According to the Finance Minister, the move is to prove that the government of Ghana led by Nana Addo is determined to alleviate the suffering of Ghanaians during this COVID-19 Pandemic fight.
“…That is also why we further reduced electricity prices by half and completely provided potable water for free for everybody since March this year. And we will extend it for another three months,” Ofori-Atta said.
Explaining the free electricity, the minister emphasized that free electricity is for lifeline consumers; that is, the consumers who consumed 50-kilowatt hours or less every month.
Other users above 50-kilowatt hours will pay half of their bill. However, the free water is for all Ghanaians.
