It will be recalled that president Akufo-Addo invited Asamoah Gyan, to the jubilee house following his decision to retire from the national team, Black Stars. As an aftermath of the meeting, Akufo-Addo urged Asamoah Gyan to rescind his decision from retiring from the Black Stars. This information was confirmed by the Communications Director at the Jubilee House, Eugene Arhin

According to Arhin, the President on Tuesday, May 22, 2019, held a meeting with the Sports Minister, Isaac Asiamah, the GFA Normalization Committee chairman, Kofi Amoah over the 2019 AFCON.
He noted that the President spoke with Asiamah and Amoah with respect to Ghana’s preparations for the tournament and how the country can end their AFCON trophy drought. Arhin further revealed that the President also spoke on phone with Gyan and urged him to reconsider decision from retiring from the national.
The President’s call came following Gyan’s decision to quit the national one month to the AFCON in Egypt. On Monday, 21, 2019, Gyan announced his retirement from the from Black Stars. The Kayserispor striker also noted in a long and touching letter that he was recusing himself from any potential selection for the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt if he is denied the captaincy at the tournament.

He noted that he “could not pretend to be happy” over how unfortunate he believes he has been treated by sections of the media.”
Gyan also continued that “if the decision of the coach is to give captaincy of the tournament to another player while I am named in the team for the tournament, I wish to recuse myself from the tournament.”
