Coronavirus: Confirmed global cases reaches 1 million with 50,000 deaths

More than a million cases of coronavirus have been registered globally, according to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University. As scary as this new information is, it puts the whole world in limbo.

Three countries are responsible for more than 45% of all cases: the U.S., Italy and Spain.

Health officials in the U.S. report more cases than any other country at more than 236,000. The death toll has made a considerable jump this week, topping 5,000 Americans have been warned to expect the situation to grow worse in the coming weeks.

In Italy, there are more than 115,000 cases. It leads the world in fatalities, with nearly 14,000. Spain reports more than 110,000 cases and 10,000 deaths.

The World Health Organization’s regional director for Europe said Thursday that almost everyone who has died of the virus in the region has been over the age of 60.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Wednesday noted that the number of total deaths has more than doubled in the past week.

“As we enter the fourth month since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, I am deeply concerned about the rapid escalation and global spread of infection,” Tedros said. “Over the past five weeks, we have witnessed a near exponential growth in the number of new cases, reaching almost every country, territory and area.”

While the total number of cases is still a small fraction of the worldwide population, experts have raised questions about the accuracy of reporting from several countries, including North Korea, Russia and China.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s COVID-19 cases stand at 204 cases with 5 death and 31 recovered. Part of this text is culled from international statistics and reports.
