Court orders the arrest of Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi, has been convicted for contempt by The High Court in Koforidua.

This ruling is as a result of his defiance of an interim injunction barring him from being sworn in as a lawmaker.

Presiding Judge, Justice Senyo Amedahe, also issued a bench warrant for Kumi’s arrest due to his inability to appear before the court for sentencing.

The court had earlier prevented the legislator from availing himself for swearing-in, pending the resolution of a court dispute. However, regardless of this directive, Kumi went ahead to take the oath of office in Parliament.

The Minority in parliament submitted an official letter to justify his absence from the hearing but the presiding judge maintained that Kumi had downplayed the court’s authority.

As it stands now, authorities are expected to enforce his arrest and ensure compliance with the court’s ruling.
