Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate in the 2024 general elections faced a striking setback in several polling stations within Kusasi-dominated communities, where he received zero votes.
Sources attribute this outcome to a longstanding feud between the Kusasis and the Mamprusis, two ethnic groups with a history of tensions.
Dr Bawumia, who is of Mamprusi descent, faced strong opposition in these areas as chiefs in the Kusasi-dominated Kusaug Traditional Area allegedly instructed their people not to vote for him.
The NPP’s struggles in these communities were compounded by a pre-election ban on the party’s campaign activities in the Kusaug Traditional Area.
This restriction, enforced by the region’s traditional authorities, significantly hampered the party’s ability to reach voters and present its message.
As speculated, the results from several polling stations in Kusasi-dominated areas highlighted the extent of this electoral rejection.
Some stations reported zero votes for Dr Bawumia, reflecting the community’s overwhelming disapproval.
