Ghpage has put together these teams who will not be at next year’s Mundial.

1. Italy

One of the most successful teams in the world of football, Italy, will not be going to Russia for the first time since 1958. Italy has won four World Cups in history with their current record being surpassed by only Brazil who have won the trophy a record five times.

Italy won the World Cup in 1934, 1938, 1982, 2006 and finished runners-up in 1970, 1994.

But the reason why they could not make it to next year’s World Cup is what beats everyone’s imagination. After finishing second in a group that contained Spain, Italy had to go through the playoffs for a spot in next year’s tournament.

However, things did not go as planned as the Azzurri’s lost to Sweden by just 0-1 on aggregate. By virtue of the outcome of the game against Sweden, Italy will not go to Russia and as a result, the likes of Buffon, Chiellini, Barzagli and De Rossi will all be absent at the World Cup.

2. Netherlands

The perennial underachiever’s whether we like it or not, are one of Europe’s finest football nations. The inventors of the ‘total football’ tactical theory have been a pale shadow of themselves for some time now.

Their inconsistency and poor form has cost them a place at next year’s World Cup. The Netherland’s have finished runners-up on three different occasions, a taboo they are yet to break as they always falter at the final hurdle.
The finished second in 1974, 1978 and 2010.

The Netherlands finished third in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification UEFA Group A behind group winners France and second placed team Sweden.

3. The United States of America

You cannot speak about football in the CONCACAF region without mentioning the name of the United States as they are one of two football powerhouses in the region — the other being Mexico.

The United States have featured in every World Cup since 1994 and their absence in next year’s World Cup is a real blow to American football.

4. Chile

Chile was one of the teams highly favoured to qualify from the South American region but failed to qualify after their defeat to already qualified Brazil coupled with other unfavourable results.

Before the last round of matches, Chile was third on the table and everything pointed at them making it to next year’s World Cup.

But a series of crazy results on the last day ensured that the current Copa America champions will not be going to Russia.

5. Cameroon

The most successful team at the World Cup with seven appearances, Cameroon was expected to lead Africa’s contingent to next year’s World Cup but a poor run of results ensured that they will not be present in Russia.

After winning the African Cup of Nations in February, everyone thought the Indomitable Lions were back to their best, only for them to flatter to deceive.

They were the first African nation to reach the Quarter Final of the World Cup when the Roger Milla led team almost conquered the whole world with their decisive play and instinctive finishes.
