The Minister of Gender, Madam Otiko Afisa Djaba has sent a word of caution to Ghanaians and foreigners as such to desist from giving alms to children and beggars on the street in order to help the ministry discharge its agenda of getting them off the street.
According to Madam Otiko Djaba, her ministry is committed to getting not just the children who beg on the streets of Ghana off the streets but also to get disabled men and women too off the street.

Speaking at stakeholders meeting to discuss the issue of street children which has become a major concern to this government since the UNICEF report revealed that over 100,000 children across the country are either begging for alms on the street or are hawking at high-risk areas in Ghana, the minister begged people to stop giving the alms as one of the first steps to discourage these kids.
According to Otiko Djaba, getting the children of the street will help the Ministry to be able to protect them against abuse and open economic support for them.

“Stop giving street children and beggars money. If you do not give them it will discourage them and they will not come back,” she said.

She, however, added that the ministry is empowering the families from which the children came from with the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP)
