Ghanaians are very stubborn- NADMO reacts to Accra Newtown building collapse

Communicator for the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Harrison Kojo Abbah, has blamed Ghanaians for the collapse of a building at Accra Newtown.

Reacting to the disaster, the communication officer stated emphatically that if anyone is to be blamed for the collapse of the building, it is Ghanaians themselves, not the government or anybody.

In buttressing his assertion, Mr. Harrison said that Ghanaians are too stubborn to build where they are not supposed to build, revealing that, when they try to ensure there are no buildings where they think there shouldn’t be, the same Ghanaians oppose them.

Speaking on Spirit FM monitored by Gh Page, he shared how on countless occasions they try to enforce the law on people who built where they weren’t supposed to build but the same people defended their actions.

He revealed โ€œThe problem is that most people build where they are not supposed to, and even when we try to enforce demolition exercises, some oppose usโ€.

According to him, โ€œThey said the area is densely populated by NPP supporters and that our actions were politically motivated, so we had to halt the exerciseโ€.

He hinted that, many Ghanaians are not safe and could be victims tomorrow, stating that โ€œWe are all sitting on time bombs. Our engineers detect defects, but people clash with us instead of following safety lawsโ€.

He noted that โ€œWe want to prevent disasters before they happen, but people bypass basic laws and continue to build in unauthorised areasโ€.
