Many people would have thought that the expose by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas would deter some people stationed at the borders from taking money from people but it looks like they have turned deaf ears to all the warnings.

According to a report by Business and Financial Times, some officers at the Terminal 3 of the airport illegally take money from visitors and refuse to issue a receipt after payment.

The immigration officers pocket revenue which is supposed to go to the government.

Narrating his story, a South African national who arrived in Ghana on Thursday, October 24, 2019, said was coerced to pay by cash, even when she insisted on paying with her Visa card.

“I told them I don’t have cash so I want to swipe my visa card to make payment; they said ‘no’, I should go and withdraw money from the ATM,” he said.

The woman furthered noted that she was made to pay GHC500 instead of the official amount of GHC800.

“They told me I can’t have a receipt. I didn’t want to insist on that because I was scared they could revoke my visa, because they were all together in that: from the one who stamped my passport and the one who takes the cash. They were communicating in their local language and I didn’t understand what they were saying,” she said.
