JJ Rawlings explains why he stopped Azuma Nelson from joining the army

Legendary Ghanaian boxer and former world champion, Azumah Nelson, has revealed how former President Jerry John Rawlings helped him to become the celebrated boxer he is now.

According to Azuma Nelson, the former president helped him in ditching his dream of joining the Ghana Armed Forces and pursue a career in boxing.

In an interview, the three-time world champion narrated how he crossed paths with his JJ Rawlings and how the former President persuade him to be a boxer than to join the army.

The former President who spotted the young Azumah at an amateur bout and quickly took interest in the unassuming Azumah has also spoken on why he stopped Azumah from rolling into the military.

“It was because I didn’t want the security he would get in joining an organisation like the armed forces were too smaller to contain the burning fire in him.”

“Whatever his lifestyle was at that time, it was helping him in some way, it was urging him on, it was encouraging him and that is what he needed; to be able to reach to the highest and I was very sure Azumah that was going to be a world champion.”

“I mean I’ve seen it all, I’ve seen them all. Azumah was just too good. He ended up proving us right. he’s a role model.”

Speaking of his humility as a professional boxer, JJ stressed that Azumah was a man of humility and never allowed fame to eat him up.

“He didn’t allow fame to go through his head, he retained his humility. Some people would have gone wayward but this man didn’t allow that to happen.”

“He had an iron heart discipline and that’s what has kept him strong even at 60,” he added.

He funded Azumah’s activities and was at some point Azumah’s manager.
