Joe Ghartey invited by NIB to assist with $2million Sky-train deal

The National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) has called former Railway Development Minister Joe Ghartey to testify over the Ghana Sky Train project.

The former administration started the project in 2018 as a significant infrastructure project to address traffic congestion, especially in the Greater Accra Region.

In 2019, under Joe Ghartey’s direction, Ghana and the Africa Investment (Ai) Sky Train Consortium inked a concession deal that was expected to cost $3 billion.

But the project never gained traction, raising questions about its viability and funding.

A state organization called the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) revealed in 2022 that it had contributed $2 million to the project but had not yet received any profits.

This expense was also brought to the public’s attention by the Auditor-General’s report.

As part of continuing investigations into suspected financial irregularities at GIIF, NIB staff arrested Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi at his home on Sunday, February 23, 2025.

Even though he was eventually freed, his arrest sparked heated discussions, with many people raising concerns about the project’s circumstances and the purported financial mismanagement.
