Assin North MP, Kennedy Agyapong has said, Contrary to speculations and high expectations that Members of Parliament are rich people, the maverick politician, has rubbish that perception.
According to him, their pockets are always empty most of the time. He made these revelations when he appeared as a guest on GHONE’s State of Affairs show, hosted by Nana Aba Anamoah.
“Being a Member of Parliament is not an easy thing, given the enormous tasks and responsibilities an MP is loaded down with”, he said.
In addition, he said since becoming an MP, the only thing he has enjoyed or benefitted is the title that comes with that privilege “Honourable”.
The member of parliament was also not happy with the fact that other arms of government enjoy special benefits which the legislature does not enjoy.
While all government agencies, departments, the executive, and judiciary are all given free cars to use, MPs pay from our salary, he stressed.
“They are also assigned bodyguards but we do not have that,” Hon. Agyapong lamented.
Furtherly he advised his colleagues to ensure that they live a normal lifestyle and stay within their means and be committed to serving their constituents.
He has, however, advised his fellow MPs to learn from him so they can avoid the pressures that come with living above your means.
“When you come to my house at Assin Foso, we keep normal foodstuff like koobi, kako, sardine, corned beef and that’s what I eat every day.”
