The authorities of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has ordered an indefinite shutdown of the university with immediate effect. The school authorities in collaboration with the Ashanti Regional Security Council has also imposed a dawn to dusk curfew on the students.
According to the authorities, Student of KNUST must observe a curfew from 6 PM today 22nd October to 6 AM 23rd October. The students are to vacate the campus by Noon tomorrow 23rd October.
This indefinite shutdown and imposition of curfew come at a time when a peaceful demonstration led by the SRC turned violent and valuable properties were vandalized.
The SRC declared enough was enough today 22nd October 2018 after months of frustrating policies imposed by the authorities. They ordered a boycott of lectures and a peaceful demonstration to display placards to demand fair treatment from the school authorities.
What was supposed to be a peaceful demonstration and a boycott of lectures by the students of the KNUST led by the school’s Student Representative Council (SRC) President, Kelvin Sah turned into a full violent agitation.
Motors bikes, cars, offices and valuable properties were vandalized, some even set on fire by the angry students who were protesting the attack on one of their students by the School’s security personnel.
