After Mr. Annan graduated from Macalester College in the US, he got his first job in the UN as a budget officer for the World Health Organization (WHO).
He enjoyed a blossoming career and was elected under-secretary-general and head of peacekeeping in 1993. Mr. Annan was elected UN general secretary in 1997, becoming the first black African to be voted into the position.
Mr. Annan was born in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. He had a twin sister, Efua Atta, who died in 1991.
He attended the elite Mfantsipim School, a Methodist boarding school from 1954 to 1957. It was here that he learnt “that suffering anywhere concerns people everywhere.”
He continued at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in 1958 for a degree in economics. Receiving a Ford Foundation grant, it enabled him to complete his undergraduate studies in economics at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1961.
Annan then completed a diplôme d’études approfondies DEA degree in International Relations at The Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland, from 1961–62.
After some years of work experience, he studied at the Business school of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States and earned a master’s degree in management from 1971-1972.
He was fluent in many languages including English, French, Akan and 7 other African languages.
Mr Kofi Annan in 1965 married Titi Alakija, a Nigerian woman from an aristocratic family. They had two children, a daughter, Ama, and later a son, Kojo. The couple separated in the late 1970s and divorced in 1983.
In 1984, Mr. Annan married Nane Annan, a Swedish lawyer at the UN and a maternal half-niece of diplomat Raoul Wallenberg. She has a daughter, Nina Cronstedt de Groot with Nane Maria.

In a statement released to the public, The Nobel Peace Laureate had his wife and children by his side during his last days in what they termed as a peaceful passing on.
