Kumasi-Based Journalist Donates To ‘Kayeyei’ Teacher Trainee To Reestablish Hope

A journalist who based in Kumasi the capital of Ashanti region has re-established the desire and hopes of a 19-year old teacher trainee student, Bariya Tiah who works as a head porter(Kayeyei) to enable her fund for her Education.

Miss Eunice Akoto Mansa Attakora-Manu who is a journalist in Kumasi with the help of other colleagues donated about GH¢ 4,031 and 50 dollars to Bariya who is in her 3rd-year in a teacher training college to enable continue her education.

reciting on how she came to meet this young ‘kayeyei’ lady she said:

“Last Saturday at the Bantama market I engaged the services of a young lady to help me with my shopping. I had asked a trader for where I could get yam, the lady responded in English where I could get some tubers of yam. I was surprised to hear her speak the language that fluently with a pan on her head roaming the market for loads to carry.

I found out that the 19-year old Bayira is in her 3rd year at a teacher Training College. She has been doing “Kayayei” to support her mum pay for fees and cater for her 3 younger ones. She says the mum usually borrow to supplement what she realizes from traveling down South to carry loads”

According to Miss Eunice who is now the sent angel, Bariya is expected to raise GH¢ 1,200 excluding her feeding fee and also buy utensils and other kinds of stuff for her “Out Programme”

Bariyah speaking on her sad encounters disclosed that people, especially women, take advantage of her citify appearance to paid her GH¢1 after carrying about 20 tubers of yam to Race Course.

“She says the maximum she has a day from her trade is GH¢ 20. Sometimes she gets GH¢ 5 which she spends on food

“I invited her home yesterday and gave her a token. Many of her age would have chosen prostitution or stealing but she didn’t.  I launched #Bariya campaign to tell her story to inspire young girls and solicit support for her and it yielded an amount of GH¢ 4,031 and 50 dollars. I wish to sincerely thank all friends especially Naa Klordey Odonkor of Ultimate F.M. and Naana Abena Ntiri of Peace F.M. for their immense support” she revealed
