Apple in the coming months are also planning to release its iPhone 17 smartphones and as such, would require their users to switch to a much latest phone to be able to keep up with the latest trends.

WhatsApp is a popular messaging app that has been in existence for over 10 years and no doubt is one of the most used messaging apps in the world with over a billion downloads.

Since its introduction, it used to work on all Android phones and IOS until years later when they became selective on which OS the app could run on.

Well, in 2025 the news of WhatsApp to stop working on some phones is back in the news again and this time affected devices are those that are running on the KitKat operating system (OS) or older versions.

For IOS, any iPhone that is not running on iOS 15.1 which is the minimum operating system requirement would not have WhatsApp working on their phones.

WhatsApp’s parent company, Meta said the decision is aimed at improving security and app functionality.

Meta said it is discontinuing support for these older devices because they lack the hardware capabilities to support the app’s evolving features and functionalities.

As WhatsApp add new features, such as AI functionalities, the platform needs more powerful hardware to ensure a smooth user experience.

It continued that Meta is discontinuing support for these older smartphones to enable the application to promote artificial intelligence (AI)-based capabilities that the older phone models would not be able to support.
