Speaking at Obo Kwahu in the Eastern Region on Saturday, 20 April 2019, His Excellency Dr Bawumia noted that at independence, northern Ghana negotiated for and obtained an agreement from the Nkrumah government to introduce free education in that part of the country.

He emphasised that the policy had immensely benefited people from northern Ghana significantly, he, however, finds it ironic that the flagbearer of the NDC, Former president Mahama is against the policy seeing that he benefited from it. He said;
“ I am a beneficiary of free education in the north, just like many members of the NDC including former President Mahama, and I am absolutely convinced that at this stage of our development, Free SHS should be enjoyed by every Ghanaian SHS student”
His comment comes as a response to Mahama’s remarks about the quality of the Free SHS policy instituted by the NPP government. He said;
“what we are doing with this huge influx into the secondary school system [due to the free SHS programme]…is going to affect the quality of the public schools.”
Dr Bawumia is amazed that Former President John Mahama sought to abolish a program which has immensely favoured him and several other Northerners.
What are your opinions? Should the programme be scrapped or should it be continued?
