One of Ghana’s biggest media houses, Media General, is still in the news following their silence on the Obuasi killing incident involving the military and some youth in the town.
Some seven or eight people lost their lives last Saturday when they attempted to enter the concession of AngloGold Ashanti following an alleged gunshot between them and the security personnel stationed at the premises.
After video and pictures surfaced on social media, Captain Smart, a presenter with Media General was blamed for inciting the people of Obuasi to storm the mining site during one of his shows.
Video of Captain Smart asking the youth of Obuasi to storm the mining site and mine from their land started speaking all over social media.
Well, a former worker with Media General identified as Sandra Esinam has taken to her timeline to bash her former employers stating they have allowed some presenters to bring the once-respected media house disrepute with their hate speech and nonsensical ideas.
According to her, it looks like all these are happening because the Group CEO is focused on collecting awards instead of adhering to the principles of journalism.
It reads: “It’s disheartening to see a once-respected institution like Media General, where I previously worked, now being used to air questionable content that showcases a lack of intellectual rigor. I’m baffled as to why the platform has allowed certain presenters to spread hate speech and nonsensical ideas. While I understand that the media landscape is becoming increasingly competitive, with bloggers and social media influencers vying for attention, a responsible media outlet like Media General should prioritize the nation’s interest and adhere to the principles of journalism. Unfortunately, it seems that the Group CEO, is more focused on collecting awards and accolades than on maintaining the network’s journalistic integrity. This is a stark reminder that, as a nation, we often celebrate mediocrity over meritocracy. It’s a sad state of affairs, and I can only hope that Media General will rediscover its commitment to responsible and informative broadcasting. The decline of a once-noble institution is a loss not just for the media industry, but for the nation as a whole.”
