Minority vows to frustrate Communications Ministry’s budget approval over SIM re-registration

The Minority in Parliament says it will not approve the budgetary allocation for the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation if the government continues to ignore concerns over the SIM card re-registration exercise.

This was after the National Communications Authority on Sunday rolled out punitive measures to be meted out to persons who are yet to register their SIM cards.

Stakeholders have however argued that some persons are unable to re-register their SIM cards over delays in the rectification of information on their Ghana cards.

In reaction to the NCA’s statement, Samuel Nartey George, the Deputy Ranking Member of the Communications Committee of Parliament, charged the government to address issues confronting the rectification and issuance of the Ghana cards.

“Last year when the Minister came [to Parliament], we refused to hear her budget when she had not submitted reports of the NCA,” Mr. George said.

“Let me serve notice that we will move everything within our means to ensure that the Ministry of Communications doesn’t get its budgetary approval for its agencies.”

NCA punitive actions

Meanwhile, rhe NCA has communicated to the general public that from September 5, 2022, unregistered sim cards will be blocked for 2 days each till September ending.

According to the NCA, mobile network subscribers in Ghana who have still not re-registered their SIM cards and has done only stage one re-registration will start receiving punitive actions including the blocking of all their outgoing calls and data services for 48 hours (2 days) per week.

A press statement from the NCA also disclosed that the sim blocking will be done in sequential batches on a weekly basis as a second punitive measure.

The first punitive measure includes re-routing of all outgoing calls for a message to be played before all calls go through every day.
