The Ghana Mobile Money (MoMo) Agents Association has announced a nationwide strike on Thursday, December 23, 2021, in protest of the contentious E-Levy.
The union described the proposed 1.75 E-levy as harmful to a business in a statement issued on Monday.
As part of their protests against the government’s proposed levy, the union’s General Secretary Evans Otumfuo stated, “we see this levy as very regressive and critical to the survival of our businesses.” As a result, as part of our demonstration on Thursday, December 23, 2021, our services as mobile money agents will be unavailable throughout the country.”
In addition, all mobile money agent stores will be closed on Thursday to send a message to the government, according to the statement.
Finance Minister Ken Offori Atta proposed the contentious E-levy in the 2022 budget. The proposed levy is 1.75 percent on all digital money transactions exceeding 100 cedis. Despite the government’s efforts to make a case for raising necessary resources, many stakeholders have been vocal in their opposition to the levy, describing it as a stranglehold on a burgeoning industry.
While the Minority has proposed lowering the levy to 1% and raising the transaction threshold to 300 cedis, the government has yet to issue a directive in this regard. The Ghana Mobile Money Agents Association has now stated that if all efforts are futile, indefinite action will be taken.
