The Edo State Police Command has arrested a woman, Martina Dachung, for allegedly selling her newborn baby for the sum of 1.4 million naira, which is equivalent to GHS 10.5 K in Uromi, located in the Edo Central Senatorial District.
The arrest was confirmed in a statement issued on Saturday, January 10, 2026, by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem.
According to the police, the suspect was apprehended following a report lodged by one Ebhomien Matthew Asibor, who raised an alarm after learning of an alleged child trafficking arrangement.
ASP Ikoedem disclosed that the police acted swiftly upon receiving the information.

Operatives from the Iruekpen Divisional Headquarters arrested Martina Dachung, who later led investigators to other individuals connected to the illegal transaction.
Two additional suspects were subsequently arrested, including Matron Ighalo Grace of Eguavon Medical Centre in Uromi and another individual, Oha Promise.
All three are alleged to have played roles in facilitating the sale of the newborn baby.
“The newborn baby boy was safely retrieved, and evidence of the monetary transaction amounting to One Million, Four Hundred Thousand Naira (?1,400,000) was recovered,” the statement said, adding that the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Edo State, CP Monday Agbonika, fdc, reassured residents of the Command’s commitment to tackling criminal activities across the state.
