The Nigerian division of MTN, a South African telecommunication company has announced the shutting down of all outlets and service centers until further notice following attacks targetted at its offices and facilities in Nigeria by some opportunistic locals.

These attacks on the host South African businesses in Nigeria are in connection to the recent xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other foreigners in South Africa.

The latest attacks in South Africa have led to the looting and torching of over fifty shops of which most of them belonged to Nigerians and other foreign nationals.

Over the last few days, facilities, customers and some stakeholders of MTN Nigeria have been subjected to attacks in retaliation to the ongoing xenophobic crisis in South Africa.

According to reports, many of these retaliative attacks happened in Lagos, Ibadan, and Uyo.

In a statement released, MTN stated “While we remain committed to providing uninterrupted services, the safety and security of our customers, staff, and partners is our primary concern. All MTN stores and service centers will, therefore, be closed as a precaution until further notice.”

“MTN condemns any acts of violence, prejudice, and xenophobia and remains absolutely committed to ensuring a peaceful, harmonious and respectful relationship with all communities in Nigeria and across Africa”, MTN said.

MTN further added that “We are engaging all relevant authorities in this regard and urge them to act swiftly to reduce tensions both in South Africa and Nigeria. We will provide further updates as and when possible”, the statement from the telecom company read.”

Many shops in Nigeria belonging to South Africans including Shoprite have also been attacked and looted within 48 hours by some Nigerians.

However, Presidents of both countries, Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa and Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria have issued statements to assure citizens everything will be done to put the situation under control very soon.
