Augustine Eguavoen resigned as coach of Nigeria’s senior national team on Sunday, just two months before they face Ghana in the decisive 2022 World Cup playoffs after the Super Eagles were eliminated in the Round of 16 at the African Cup of Nations.

Eguavoen stepped down as interim coach of the Super Eagles on Sunday night, immediately after they were eliminated from the tournament in Cameroon by the less fancied Tunisia.

Nigeria were defeated 1-0 by the Carthage Eagles in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 clash in Garoua, prompting the former international defender to resign.

Eguavoen had led the three-time champions to three consecutive victories over Egypt, Sudan, and Guinea-Bissau, raising hopes that the Super Eagles were on their way to a fourth title.

However, they were shockingly knocked out of the competition by a Tunisia side that had been weakened by a Covid-19 outbreak among their squad but still managed to eliminate the African giants, prompting Eguavoen to fall on his sword.

“What happens next is that I’m the interim coach and Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF),” Eguavoen said in a post-match press conference.

“I will go back to my position and allow the NFF (to) decide on the way forward.”

Eguavoen was named interim coach of the Super Eagles after Gernot Rohr was fired last month, and the team’s performance in the group stage prompted calls for him to be named permanent coach.

Before the AFCON kicked off in Cameroon, the NFF had already named Jose Peseiro as the new permanent coach of the Super Eagles.

Nigeria will face Ghana in March in two World Cup playoff matches to decide one of the five African slots at the tournament to be played in Qatar.
