Police Officer Likely to face 10 years imprisonment – Ghana Gender Minister

The police officer, who assaulted a woman at the Shiashie branch of Midland Savings and Loans in Accra, is likely to face a ten-year jail term if he is charged with a second-degree felony according to the Minister of Women and Children’s affairs Otiko Afisa Djaba.

The minister said that in an interview on UTV and as monitored by GHPAGE.com added that, the police officer’s action is a crime condemnable in Ghana and even in the criminal code, it is a second-degree felony in the constitution of Ghana.

She continued that, though the punishment for such criminal activity has not been specified, anyone who gets convicted will be liable to a term of imprisonment not exceeding ten years but might exceed that if it’s established to be a second-degree felony.

For an action which is clearly a criminal offense will also determine the kind of punishment the judge will issue to him, she stated.

The minister also commended her colleague interior minister, Mr. Ambrose Dery, for also condemning the actions of the police officer and said because it is a criminal matter, her ministry can not issue an arrest but the police.

She said will see to it that, her officers will visit the woman to see what they can immediately do to help her overcome this trauma.

She also advised the attorney general’s office to see to it that, the police officer, Frederick Amanor’s prosecution will go smoothly so it serves as a deterrent to others.

In the video, The police officer is seen holding onto the woman and hitting her multiple times with an umbrella, as she tried to wrestle away.

Some bystanders eventually rescued the baby from the incident as the officer drags the woman to the floor.

The officer also lands several punches to the head of the wailing woman who was at the bank to withdraw GHc270.

The video of the incident which has since gone viral has enraged many Ghanaians who took to social media to express outrage. The Police officer has since been arrested.
