President John Dramani Mahama has, in consultation with the Council of State and in exercise of his constitutional powers under Article 72 of the Constitution, remitted the remaining prison sentence imposed on the Montie three Salifu Maase (alias Mugabe), Alistair Nelson and Ako Gu.
The opposition New Patriotic Party has expressed strong sentiment against the President taking that action.
The communication outfit of the NPP released a press statement condemning the action of the President few hours after the communication minister, Omane Boama released the remission statement
MONDAY 22nd August, 2016
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has noted the statement signed by the Communications Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah which granted remission of sentence to the three jailed individuals sighted to have scandalized the courts and threatened judges of the Republic of Ghana.
We are indeed disappointed in the president of the Republic His Excellency John Dramani Mahama for this singular act which appears to be an endorsement of behaviours unacceptable in our society.
These are individuals who were jailed legally by the courts to deal with recalcitrant behaviours and a creeping social canker that would devour this nation if not checked.
We wish to state clearly that the NPP abhors disrespect for authority and would not associate with this action taken by the president.
We wish to also demand that the president takes steps to reverse the decision reached as it stands to open our judiciary to attacks that would not benefit this country.
As a result, we call on all Ghanaians to take a cue from this and ensure that they vote out this incompetent administration in order to restore law and order in the Ghanaian society.
