A countless number of residents from the Awoshie-Ablekuma-Pokuase stretch; suburbs in Accra, have in their agony decided to block roads in the vicinity over the failure of the authorities to fix faulty traffic lights.

A demonstration that began in the morning on a quiet note took a harsh turn when the protesters decided to block the major roads as they burn car tires amidst chants of annoyance.

According to reports, hundreds of residents have been overwhelmed with the high record of motor accidents and loss of lives on the road due to the absence of functioning traffic lights.

These protestors declared that their decision to demonstrate is borne out of the sheer carelessness of the authorities and especially the MP to attend to their urgent needs.

“The cars have been killing our children and people who cross. Just on Monday, a child was knocked down by another car and that is why we are demanding that the traffic lights on our roads are fixed as soon as possible,” an angry resident lamented.

In agreement, they announced their intentions not to participate in the coming general elections if their roads are not fixed with functioning traffic light to regulate the movement of vehicles and pedestrians.

Following the chaos, the police together with the military had to intervene to curtail the further destruction of properties and lives.

Also, the police were present to ensure that innocent commuters are allowed to move irrespective of the demonstration.

Stubborn residents who despite the presence of the police were adamant were dealt with by the security forces who issued some arrests and forcefully prevented the mob from taking over the road.

Per reports, the presence of the military and the police helped to restore calm and peace to Awoshie and its environs.
