“Sakawa” is not a new word to Ghanaians anymore.They are also called game boys or use to be called “Yahoo” boys. Sakawa,game or yahoo boys are named(the later) after one of the biggest internet companies in the world.-Yahoo!

They got that name because of the free email services they provide with which those involved in the “business” use to communicate with their victims. You remember the popular Yahoo messenger?

It has transmogrified to the modern day Sakawa we call it now.

NB: This post is in no way encouraging sakawa activities but purely published for information purposes and to create awareness of their tricks they use so the public become aware.

What’s Sakawa or who are Sakawa Boys?

Sakawa is Ghanaian term for illegal practices which combine modern Internet-based fraud with religious rituals.

The rituals, which are mostly in the form of sacrifices, are intended to spiritually manipulate victims so that the scammer’s fraud is successful.

The term Sakawa initially referred to specific online scams but has since broadened to include all types of online frauds and scams mainly targeting foreigners.

The scammers flaunt stylish clothes, luxury cars, and enormous wealth, in order to promote this act. In impoverished areas, it can be seen as a way of survival for some.

This fraud-ism started in the early 2000’s and has now become a source of livelihood for most of the youth in Ghana,Nigeria and a lot of the West African countries.

Are Internet fraud and Sakawa the same ?

Well, there have been a lot of debate over this same topic as to whether internet Fraud and Sakawa are the same.Let’s draw the lines to see whether both are the same or not.
