School building collapses in Nigeria; several children trapped

A building which has a school on the top floor of a three-storey building in Ita Faji, Lagos Island in Lagos State has collapsed.

According to reports over 100 children have been trapped in the building but no casualties have been recorded yet.

The cause of the collapse is not known but currently, emergency teams are the scene, pulling people from the building.

Some worried parents have also arrived at the scene hoping to see their children.

According to local media reports, the collapsed building was a residential block containing a number of apartments.

A spokesperson for the National Emergency Management Agency, Ibrahim Farinloye said the collapse happened at 10:00 local time.

“It is believed that many people including children are currently trapped in the building”, he stated.

According to sources, this is not the first time a building has collapsed in Nigeria due to sub-standard materials used in the building.

In 2016, over 100 people died when the roof of a church in Uyo, in the south of Nigeria collapsed.
