The Spanish FA got furious with the manager Julen Lopetegui after agreeing to take the vacant Real Madrid job and announced the news in an emergency press conference on Wednesday.
The head of Spanish FA, Luis Rubiales, is thought to be ‘furious’ and ‘deeply upset’ after Lopetegui told him of his plans to join the Champions League winners just 15 minutes before an official announcement was made.
It is believed the Real Madrid players in the squad knew about the appointment but others were left in the dark.
Rubiales is now massively concerned over squad unity with Spain taking on Euro 2016 champions Portugal on Friday.
He was supposed to be at a Fifa conference to vote on the host for the 2026 World Cup today but instead flew to Russia before heading to Spain’s training base.
The announcement to replace Zinedine Zidane as Real Madrid boss was supposed to be made after the World Cup but a leak in the camp forced the Champions League winners to reveal the appointment.
Spain sporting director Fernando Hierro and Under-21 coach Albert Celades will take charge for the World Cup.
