The minister of information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah today the 15th of March, 2020, confirmed additional four cases of the novel Coronavirus in Ghana.

Amongst the four cases confirmed is a female student, The Director of Public Health at Ghana Health Service, Dr Badu Sarkodie confirmed.

He said;

The second is a woman, a Ghanaian student. She travelled out to the USA. Stayed there for about 10 days. She came back on the 9th of March and on 13th of March, started having symptoms…Samples were taken to Noguchi on 13th and the same day we had a report from Noguchi that confirmed this as another case of COVID-19.

Upon further investigation GhPage discovered that the imported case involves a University of Ghana non-resident student who recently travelled overseas.

According to the university authorities who have confirmed our findings, the case resumed lectures soon after returning from her overseas travel. The case has therefore come in contact with some students and staff during this timeframe.

Reacting to this recent occurrence, the school has been thrown into a state of mass panic as the university’s students fear that they could be infected should they remain on campus.

In a bid to allay their fears the University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu in a public address via the university’s radio station, Radio Universe, urged students to remain calm and avoid panicking as the situation is currently under control.

He further declared that all lectures have been suspended until further notice as they trace the contacts of the case. He strongly urged resident students to remain on campus and self isolate whilst monitoring themselves for symptoms in order avoid spreading the virus if they have already been infected.

He also instructed non-resident students to remain in their various homes and to not visit the campus premises until further notice.

An official communique issued by the university’s Registar details the specific procedure the university intends to follow in order to curb further spread of the deadly virus.

The case is said to be currently receiving treatment and being carefully monitored. All contacts of the patient are being traced and would be tested and quarantined.

The World Health Organisation has declared the virus as a global pandemic as it has infected thousands of people around the globe and continues to spread rapidly.

Ghana’s minstry of health is reassuring Ghanaians that the institution is working tirelessly to contain the virus.

A ‘partial’ ban on international travel both in-bound and out-bound has been announced by the government as part of the measures being applied to curtail the spread of the virus.
