Following backlash since news broke that a pregnant woman, Angela Afriyie Agyemang, and her unborn baby have died at the Suntreso Government Hospital because the husband couldn’t immediately provide GHS500 “Doctor Motivation Fee”, the hospital has set up a committee to investigate and bring its recommendations in one week time.
News broke yesterday when the husband of the deceased woman, Pastor Solomon Lamo Latiff told Moro Awudu of Class FM that, the wife who just turned 30 years was refused admittance into the theater for her Caesarean Section because he couldn’t immediately pay the GHS500.
Pastor Solomon explained that one Dr. Sarpong had told them the wife needs to be operated on but they have to provide the “Doctors motivation fee ” first. When he finally came up with the money, it was too late for the wife and she died in the theater.
Speaking to OTEC NEWS’ Kwasi Acheampong, The Medical Director of the Suntreso Hospital, Dr. Agyarko Poku revealed that an independent committee has been set up to investigate the unfortunate situation and submit their findings and recommendations
“The Terms of Reference of the committee are to investigate the circumstances that led to the death of Mrs. Angela Afriyie Agyemang and to establish whether there was negligence of duty on the part of the staff in the handling of the patient,” Dr. Agyarko Poku revealed.
“Though investigation will be ongoing, the staff involved will be at the post to offer their services to patients. Per the structures of the hospital, staff under investigation like this is made to remain at post.”
“There are a lot of patients here and staff here is limited, putting them aside will have serious negative effects in the administering of health care to our numerous patients,” he added.
