VIDEO: Teacher hospitalized after been beaten by headmaster for reporting to school late

KENYA – A Junior Secondary School teacher at Nyanchoka DEB in Nyamira County is nursing injuries in the hospital after he was beaten up by a headteacher for allegedly arriving at school late.

Addressing the media on Tuesday, February 25, Vincent Onyancha said he was assaulted on Friday last week after he arrived at school late.

Onyancha revealed that he was in class teaching grade 8 students when the headteacher got into the classroom, slapped him, and kicked him in front of the students.

“It was on Friday, and I went to school a bit late. When I arrived, I entered the Grade 8 classroom and started teaching. All of a sudden, I felt a slap.

When I turned to look, I saw that it was the head teacher, whose name is Dickens Omenda,” the JSS teacher claimed.

Onyancha disclosed that the head teacher dragged him to his office, closed it, and continued assaulting him.

“He dragged me to his office. When we got to the office, he locked the door, threw me to the ground, and kept beating and stomping on me. Now, I am helpless and in the hospital,” he added.

Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) officials in Nyamira have condemned the incident and demanded the Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC) to take action against Omenda.

“As a union on behalf of our teachers across the county, we are demanding that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) immediately relives that headteacher his responsibilities from that school failure to do that we are going to advise our teachers in Junior School as from tomorrow not to report to any school,” one of the KUPPET officials stated.

Meanwhile TSC Director in Nyamira County, Erick Magak has said investigations have been launched against the Nyanchoka DEB headteacher.
