Volta Region is one of Ghana’s ten regions with Ho as its capital. It is located at the West side of the Republic of Togo and the east of Lake Volta.

The people of the Volta region are part of the larger Ghanaian population with about every ethnic group represented in the region. The main ethnic groups are Ewe, Guan, Akan and Gurma with Ewe’s consisting 68.5% of the entire population.

The voltarians originally practise the traditional system of worship but with the arrival of the Christian missionaries, many converted to Christianity. While the Ewe, Guan and Akan are mostly Christians, the Hausa and Gurma in the northern districts are Muslims.

However, people normally refer to the Voltarians as ‘Number 9’ because it was believed to be the ninth region to be created in Ghana, which is not entirely true.

However, the term ‘Number 9’ came about through the first national beauty contest which took place on the 4th March 1957 to signal Ghana’s independence.

The contest was held at the Accra Community Centre and organised by the Department of Social Welfare.

22-year-old Monica Amekoafia was the representative from the Volta region and was the 9th contestant. She was wearing the Number 9 tag and represented Trans-Volta Togoland now known as the Volta region.

Monica won the beauty contest in 1957 and became the 1st Miss Ghana. She had a captivating and charming smile which was admired by many viewers who only knew her as the contestant with the ‘Number 9’ tag. She was the crowd’s favourite.

After the competition, the tag became a nickname for every lady from the Volta region. However, in 2007 the statuette of Monica Amekoafia of blessed memory was unveiled at a brief ceremony as part of the country’s Golden Jubilee celebration at Hohoe.
