Here’s Why Asamoah Gyan didn’t Hand Over the Captain’s Armband To Dede Ayew During the Ethiopia Match

Why Asamoah Gyan didn't Hand Over the Captain's Armband To Dede Ayew

The Asantehene, Osei Tutu II, earlier on had urged the duo to throw out any unwelcome negative media reportage if they want peace reign at the camp of the national team.

Ahead of their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Ethiopia at the Kumasi Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday, 11th June 2017, the 30-year-old Ghana Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan was later substituted in the 65th minute for striker Majeed Waris.

With the usual norm of giving out the captain’s hand band to the deputy captain, Gyan walked straight to the Black Stars bench, still wearing his ‘customized’ armband.

Andre Dede Ayew was seen on the touchline taking a different captain’s armband from an official of the Black Stars, fuelling speculation that indeed, there is a rift between the two leaders of the senior Ghana national team.

This resulted in several reactions from Ghanaians as to why Asamoah Gyan refused to give the captain’s armdband to Andre Ayew.

However, what gathers is that Asamoah Gyan had customized the captain’s armband, having his face on it thus can not share with the deputy.

Ayew had to receive a different captain’s armband from an official of the Black Stars for the remainder of the game.
