Ursula Owusu, the Communications Minister, has defended the government’s decision to levy a 1.75 per cent tax on all electronic transactions in the country.
The Ablekuma West MP stated at a town hall meeting in Koforidua on Thursday that the e-levy is comparatively lower when compared to the rate of digital taxes in other jurisdictions such as the United Kingdom.
According to her, citizens must be willing to accept the 1.75 per cent e-levy if Ghana is to raise enough revenue to improve development. According to her, the levy is being implemented at a relatively lower rate.
??”In August of that year, President Kufuor’s government implemented the Communications Service Tax, which became another source of revenue for national development.”
“ That tax was initially imposed at a rate of 6%, but it was later raised to 9%. The e-levy is being implemented at the lowest rate of any tax in Ghana, at 1.75 per cent. It is less than 2%. Digital taxes of up to 10% are being implemented in other countries, and they are being paid.”
That is the United Kingdom. And we go there to ask for loans to fund our development. When we do not pay the necessary taxes,” Ursula Owusu stated.
