“They don’t care about us” – Ghanaians react to passing of 2022 Budget after earlier rejection by parliament

Ghanaians have reacted widely to the eventual passing of the 2022 Budget and Economic Planning Statement by parliament.

Earlier this week, some MPs rejected the budget by describing it as hardship-inducing and insensitive.

The 137 MPs that sat down to vote to reject the budget said the taxes that were introduced in it would suffocate Ghanaian businesses and increase the plight of ordinary Ghanaians.

That was after MPs belonging to the Majority Caucus decided to stage a walkout after their demand for the General Secretary of the NDC Johnson Aseidu Nketiah to leave the public gallery failed.

On November 30, 2021, days after the Budget had been rejected, parliament reconvened and got it passed. The Minority Caucus was not present in parliament as the 137 legislators on the side of the Majority Caucus voted for its approval.

The House was presided by First Deputy Speaker Joseph Osei Owusu in the absence of Speaker Alban Bagbin who was out to seek medical attention.

Ghanaians have reacted with disdain and somewhat anger to the passing of the 2022 Budget which will introduce new taxes such as the E-Levy on Electronic Transfers like Mobile Money (MoMo) amongst others.

Many have intimated that the MPs did not take the concern of the citizenry into consideration before accepting to pass the 2022 Budget. The reaction, this time, has been different in comparison to the reaction that greeted the news when it emerged that parliament had rejected the budget.

The sentiments of many Ghanaians have been expressed and the message is clear that the 2022 Budget although has been passed, was not passed in the interest of Ghanaians.

The Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu in a press conference in the aftermath of the passing of the 2022 Budget said it was not done according to best practices. He explained that parliament sidestepped the right procedures in order to get the budget passed at all costs.
