What is an attestation letter?
A letter of attestation is a letter that is written or signed to confirm a statement, action or behavior. The writer is certifying (attesting) that they personally witnessed or know something to be true.
For example a common practice for new employees to certain jobs is to fill out and sign a letter of attestation for good character, confirming that they do not have a criminal record or convictions related to sexual abuse or violent crime.
In a much less formal scenario employers may write a brief letter attesting to the good behavior of a former employee, to be used in future job applications.
Canada Student Visas Now Require an Attestation Letter
Starting January 22, 2024, almost all study permit applicants are required to submit a letter of attestation from the province or territory where they are applying (some exceptions apply).
It’s important to note that applications submitted on or after January 22, 2024, without an attestation letter will be considered incomplete and returned, unless the applicant is exempt from this requirement.
Therefore, until the provinces and territories implement their respective processes for issuing attestation letters, the acceptance of new study permit applications to Canada is effectively on hold. Applicants should be aware that any application submitted without this letter will be returned unprocessed.
How to get an attestation letter for a study permit?
As of January 22, 2024, you cannot obtain an attestation letter. This means that you cannot apply for a study permit, except if you meet their limited exceptions (i.e. minor, study permit extension or master/PhD/post-graduate program).
Who does not need an attestation letter?
An attestation letter is not required when applying for a study permit in the following cases:
- 1. If you are a minor child enrolling in primary or secondary education, ranging from kindergarten through grade 12.
2. If you are applying for a Masters, PhD, or any other post-graduate program.
3. If you are a current student seeking to extend your study permit.
