I’m not ready to bend the rules for anyone – Bagbin replies Majority

Rt. Hon Alban Bagbin who is the speaker of Parliament has asked the majority caucus in Parliament not to blame him for their troubles.

He explained that Parliament would run smoothly if only the two political parties could meet and dialogue.

According to him, he is the speaker of Parliament and has to enforce that the standing orders of Parliament are obeyed to the latter.

There have been some allegations against the Speaker that he is trying to make things difficult for the Nana Addo led administration and the NPP because he is a member of the NDC.

But explaining himself, he revealed that the NPP and majority is making such claims because he doesn’t bend the laws to favour anyone.

He continued that this is the case because Ghana since 1992 has never had a slim parliament that is the reason why people believe he is making the work of the President and his party.

He said: “Both belong to the same party and they cannot both occupy the Deputy Speaker of Parliament position. It is not me saying it, it is the 1992 constitution saying it. It is this independent member who was a former member of the party in power that they want to draw their strenght from.”

“I am the speaker, I don’t take part in the decisions but it is my duty to enforce the rules and the law and in trying to do this definitely in a country that is used to tumultuous majoritarian government will definitely meet resistance but these are the problems of change and transformation. I think that the only way as he himself said was to get the two sides to consult more, to dialogue, to cooperate with each other, to compromise, to collaborate and to achieve consensus.”
