Spain appoints Fernando Hierro as their new head coach

Spain has officially appointed Fernando Hierro as their new head coach for the incoming World Cup shortly after the sacking of Julen Lopetegui.

The former Real Madrid captain and assistant manager had been sporting director for the Spanish FA and his swift appointment is seen as a seamless transition for the national team.

The former defender has one season managerial experience having coached La Liga side Real Oviedo in the 2016/2017 but left a year ago following a mid-table finish.

Hierro netted 29 times for Spain in 89 international appearances. He also captained Spain in the 1994 World Cup.

The Spanish FA got furious with the manager Julen Lopetegui after agreeing to take the vacant Real Madrid job and announced the news in an emergency press conference on Wednesday.

The head of Spanish FA, Luis Rubiales, is thought to be ‘furious’ and ‘deeply upset’ after Lopetegui told him of his plans to join the Champions League winners just 15 minutes before an official announcement was made.
