The first Ghanaian woman who was sentenced to death by firing squad has narrated to Otwinoko her story of how she was arrested, why and how she finally got released by the Justice for all program.
31-year-old Madam Grace Adom Agyare was arrested on 2nd December 1988 for allegedly killing her boyfriend and was subsequently sentenced to death together with 3 other men in 1989. She was released in 2010 through the “Justice For All System”.
Narrating her story to Otwinoko, Madam Grace Adom Agyare revealed that her husband traveled to Canada in the early 1980s and for 4 years, she never heard anything from him and neither did he send any money. She alone was responsible for taking care of their 3 children.

Finding it difficult to sustain herself financially, she dated a man but broke it off within 3 months because the man was stingy and was not helping her. But within that 3 months, the man changed his personal driver and brought in another driver.
5 months after she broke off with the man, she heard that the ex-boyfriend is missing. But from nowhere, the police stormed her home on 2nd December 1988 and arrested her.
When she demanded to know why she was arrested, she was told the first driver of the ex-boyfriend has been arrested with the car of the man with other two men and he told them she hired them to kill the ex-boyfriend.

She denied but she was tortured and tried at the tribunal where she together with the other 3 men were sentenced in 1989 to death by firing squad. Her plea of innocence was never accepted. They were incarcerated in Nsawam maximum prison
The day before the men were shot dead in the firing squad, the driver confessed to the authorities that the woman and one other guy were innocent but he was told it was too late. All the men were shot dead that day.

She was later moved from death row to life imprisonment after 14 years. She served in the life imprisonment for another 7 years until she was released in 2010 through the “Justice For All Program”.
Madam Grace Adom Agyare was 52 years when she was finally released for a crime she never committed.
