5 facts about Charlotte Osei you didn’t know

Ghpage.com reported yesterday that the president of Ghana has removed the Chairperson of Ghana’s electoral commission Mrs Charlotte Osei from office this evening, 28th June 2018.

Not only Mrs Charlotte Osei was removed from office. Her two deputies, Ms Georgina Amankwah as well as Mr Amadu Sulley were equally removed from office with immediate effect.

Madam Osei has been under the spotlight for many months, following allegations of financial malfeasance labelled against her.

The EC boss has also been on bad terms with her two deputies, Amadu Sulley and Georgina Opoku Amankwah, with the trio accusing each other of mismanagement of the Commission’s funds.

Below are five facts about Madam Charlotte Osei you might have missed.

1. She’s Ghana’s first female to serve as EC boss: Charlotte Osei made history when she was appointed the chairperson of the Electoral Commission by the former president, John Mahama becoming the first female to occupy the high position since Ghana’s Independence.

She was appointed ahead of the 2016 elections following the retirement of Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, her predecessor.

2. She also served as Chairperson for NCCE: Charlotte Osei used to serve as chairperson for the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) from 2011 to 2015 before her appointment as EC  Boss,

3. She is a lawyer: One other fact about Charlotte Osei’s personality that many people do not know is that she is a lawyer. The embattled EC boss actually obtained her LLB in 1992 at the Ghana School of Law.

Madam Osei also has a Master of Law, (LLM), from Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada and a Master of Business Leadership (MBL) from the University of South Africa.

4. She was called to the bar in 1994: Having successfully graduated as a lawyer at the Ghana School of Law in 1992, Madam Charlotte Osei was called to the bar just two years later.

In 1994, she was called to the bar and has also worked as a Senior Legal Officer at the Ghana Commercial Bank in the past.

5. She lectured at UG from 1995 – 2003: As intelligent as she is, Charlotte Osei lectured at the University of Ghana where she had two spells with the University, in the mid and late ‘90s.

She served as a Teaching Assistant at the Faculty of Law in 1995 and 1996 and again served as a part-time lecturer in commercial law at the university from 1997 until 2003.
