The Omanhene of Edina Traditional Area, Nana Kodwo Condua VI has threatened to lock up the Elmina Castle with his “Royal Power” if the government fails to address their needs after several meetings.

According to the Omanhene, several requests have been made to the Ministry of Tourism, Monument Board and Authorities at the Museum but no avail.

He made this threat during the celebration of Edina Bakatue festival celebrated by the chiefs and people of Elmina.

Nana Condua revealed that royalties due to the Traditional Council have stopped coming in since 2009, without any apparent reason given.

He went on to say that the Traditional Council only started royalties receiving from the government in 2002 after he had personally appealed to former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

He appealed to the government through Ministry of Tourism, Authorities at the Museum and Monument Board as a matter of urgency to restore a quota of the revenue generated from the Elmina castle to the traditional area for development.

He explained that the money received was used to enroll brilliant but needy students who attend various institutions.

The Edina Bakatue festival also coincided with Nana Condua’s 20th year on the stool as the Omanhene of the Edina State, which was celebrated with the theme “Buy made in Ghana goods, use made in Ghana products, support Ghanaian industries and create employment for the youth”.

He announced that through his effort as the Chief of the area to tackle sanitation challenges in Elmina by making the area one of the cleanest town in Ghana, he (Nana Kodwo Condua) has been named as sanitation ambassador.

Nana used the festival to urge parents and guardians to send their wards to school to enable them to enjoy the free Senior High School (SHS) initiated by the government to ease the burden on parents who cannot afford School fees.

This, he observed, “development of a nation is not about buildings or roads alone, human resource capacity must be part of the growing concern of the societies”.

Touching on the ban of fishing activities by the Ministry of Fisheries, Nana Condua called on fishermen, stakeholders, Traditional Authorities among others to support the Ministry of Fisheries to implement this painful policy for the benefit of all fishermen.
