The said pills upon research, work by producing some chemical reactions that reduce the flow of hormones that darken the skin of the child, giving them light-skinned while they are still in the womb.

One of the main drugs in question, Glutathione is one of the most well-known supplements in the healthcare industry.

However, mothers have started using the opportunity to handle its side effects with the intention to adjust the complexion of their unborn babies.

Medical experts on the use of such drugs have admitted that it is illegal, as it can cause birth defects, including damage to the baby’s limb and internal organs.

Ghana‘s Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has also spoken against the use of these pills for such purposes as it appears dangerous, throwing words of caution to the general public.

“the general public has to know that no product has been approved by the FDA in the form of a tablet to lighten the skin of the unborn child,” Ghana FDA.

The FDA’s head of cosmetics and household chemicals, Emmanuel Nkrumah, during a media-sensitization workshop on unapproved bleaching pills and products revealed how the pills have reached its critical stage and how ignorant people become in using those pills.

“The use of these drugs has gone to an alarming stage; it is ignorance that is making people do so,” emmanuel nkrumah said.

“[The only things] that you take orally should be food, toothpaste and mouthwash, and not bleaching pills,” he added.

According to the FDA, the practice is growing in Ghana as the pills often smuggled into the country inside luggage at airports in large numbers.

Although extensive data has not yet been gathered, the body says market observation and stakeholder activity have helped to reveal the trend among women crosses socio-economic divides.

Security agencies and police are working together to arrest and prosecute companies and individuals in possession of the illegal tablets.
