The first Meet the press encounter between the president and the media in 2018 was held yesterday.

Besides the many important questions thrown at the president and the few irrelevant ones, the president Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo gave 6 tough and assuring statements to Ghanaians.

1. “Martin Amidu will enforce the fear of Go

d in past and present public officials who want to be corrupt”

Touching on the issue of corruption which has bedeviled the nation, President Akufo Addo stated that the establishment of the special prosecutor’s office and the choice of Martin Amidu as the special prosecutor will enforce the fear of God in past and present public officials who want to be corrupt.

The president believes the citizen vigilante, Martin Amidu will ensure corruption is minimized in the country and faulters of the law punished.

2. “Some allegations towards me, my cabinet are flimsy, irresponsible”

The president reiterated his commitment to fighting corruption by investigating any corruption allegation leveled any of his cabinet or appointees by an independent body.

He, however, added that so far, all the “allegations towards me, my cabinet are flimsy, irresponsible”.

3. “I sit and eat with expatriate awardee; how can he pay to sit next to me?”

Touching on the cash for seat scandal that has rocked his administration, President Akufo Addo stated that almost every expatriate who sat close to him was his best and closest friend whom he dines with so it makes no sense for them to pay money just to sit by him.

He added that he was shocked when the organizers and the trade ministry, organizers of the Expatriates’ Awards was accused of charging the awardees $100,000 to sit beside him.

4. “The size of my cabinet does not matter, we are working”

Once again the president was asked if he is bothered about his government size which has 110 ministers in it.

But the president stated that he is not bothered by the size of his government so far as they are delivering on the promises made to Ghanaians.

5. “Fulani menace will not escalate to a national security issue”

The president talked about the influx of Nomadic herdsmen also known as Fulani herdsmen in certain parts of Ghana where they have been accused of several atrocities.

President Akufo Addo during the Meet the press encounter revealed that certain special programs are already in place to solve that menace. He stated that the government is looking at building special centers to cater for the cattle to graze.

6. “Ghana is safe, security being beefed up”

In light of the fact that the police recently intercepted bombs and guns which allegedly belonged to some ISIS terrorists, the president assured that the country is safe and ready for any terrorist attack.

He also revealed that currently, major steps are being made to upgrade the capacities of the Ghana military.
