Asamoah Gyan, a former Black Stars captain, was devastated after the senior national team was eliminated from the 2021 AFCON on Tuesday night.

A 3-2 defeat to unfancied Comoros confirmed Ghana’s elimination from the competition, marking the first time the Black Stars had exited an AFCON without a win.

On SuperSport, a visibly upset Asamoah Gyan struggled to keep his cool as he assessed Ghana’s performance during the group stages.

Gyan was disappointed that the Black Stars only showed any desire when they were reduced to 10 men in the first half after captain Andre Ayew was sent off.

This, according to Ghana’s all-time leading scorer, is not what Ghanaians have come to expect from the Black Stars.

“I’m devastated. I’m shocked. You can’t win a game with this kind of attitude. I saw the real Ghana when we went down to ten men,” he said.

“We didn’t have a sense of urgency throughout the tournament. Why do you only push when you have ten men instead of 11 men? We didn’t play with determination We didn’t play with any ambition. We’ve lost, we’re going home.

“Everyone in Ghana will be disappointed. We didn’t create many chances and we’re going home. I’m very disappointed we’re going home. We didn’t see the Ghana we know today.”

Commenting on the red card picked up by Dede Ayew, Asamoah Gyan said the team performed better when they were down to 10-men. However, he admitted that the red card was harsh.

“It was a harsh decision by the referee,” Gyan lamented.

“He was sliding in, he was trying to score. He got the ball first but unfortunately, he collided with the goalkeeper’s hand.”
