In a report by mynewsgh.com, the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners (GNASSM), warned the government to refrain from politicizing the vetting procedure to determine formally recognized miners.

Small-scale miners in Ghana have issued a word of caution to the government, as plans are being put in place to regularize their operations.

In the wake of plans to lift up the ban on illegal mining, a committee has been formed with the mandate of ensuring that legally recognized miners are given the permission to work in peace.

Through the Lands and Natural Resources ministry, the Akufo-Addo-led administration has placed a ban on illegal mining, and the reason for the ban was as a result of the destruction of the environment as well as an attempt to protect the natural resources.

After the ban, a joint police-military operation, dubbed ‘Operation Vanguard’ was established to serve as a back up to deal with the matter.

Reports emerging from the presidency indicates that the government has revealed plans of vetting the processes involved in acquiring a mining license and a lease, and in that respect, deny those without the necessary documents the right to mine.

Nevertheless, a member of the national communications team of GNASSM, Benjamin Annan, has cautioned the government against any form of bias in their attempt to scrutinize the mining permits.

“We do not want anybody to destroy our water bodies and we shall not allow any politician to agree to ‘galamsey’ operations”, he stated.

In addition, he warned, “This is a national issue, the resources belong to all Ghanaians, therefore we don’t have to politicize our work, for this reason, the government must not joke with it”.
