The most mentioned name in Ghana over the last 24 hours is Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Kwesi Nyantakyi.

The GFA boss is reported to have used the President and his Vice President’s names to ‘defraud by false pretence’ – an act which was captured in Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ yet-to-be-released exposé titled “Number 12”.

Now let’s take a look at some of his biggest controversies since he became FA boss.

Match-fixing scandal

One of Kwesi Nyantakyi’s biggest scandals came in 2014 when he was captured in an investigative piece spearheaded by British newspaper The Telegraph.

The paper sent reporters, who posed as agents, to negotiate with Nyantakyi over the possibility of they fixing matches of the Black Stars.

Nyantakyi was captured in video dealing with the officials, with The Telegraph later accusing him of being involved in some shady deals to fix international friendly matches for the national team.

However, he was later cleared by the Ethics Committee who were ordered by FIFA to deal with the issue.

West Head scandal

In another episode that involved the GFA and an agent in brokering a sponsorship deal, the Association named West Head as the brokers of GNPC’s sponsorship of the Black Stars.

However, it was later revealed that there was no third party when the sponsorship was signed in 2012.

According to then GNPC boss, Ato Ahwoi, the decision to sponsor the Black Stars was purely the company’s and therefore no money was given to an agent, contrary to the story put out by the GFA.

Bloated payment for friendlies

Kwesi Nyantakyi became an object of public scrutiny after it emerged that he led the GFA to take double payments for the organization of friendly matches of the Black Stars before the 2014 World Cup.

The Dzamefe Commission, set up to probe Ghana’s poor showing in Brazil, uncovered that the GFA took money from both government and GNPC in organizing the friendlies.

The revelation came as a shock to many Ghanaians, with Nyantakyi being ordered by the Commission to refund the money to the state.

The Co-efficient gaffe

Again during the hearing of the Dzamefe Commission, Nyantakyi caused a nationwide uproar when he disclosed that he shared an amount of $557,000 among seven management committee members of the GFA.

Asked how he did it, the GFA boss said he shared the money using the co-efficient of seven, to the dismay of many.

More surprising was the fact that Nyantakyi’s former vice, Jordan Anagblah, who died before the World Cup started, was listed as one of the beneficiaries of the “co-efficient”.

Mid Sea scandal

Till date, one of the dark spots on Nyantakyi’s reign as FA boss was the manner in which the Glo sponsorship deal played out.

The telecommunication giants injected $15million into the Ghana Premier League as sponsorship in 2008, to the delight of many Ghanaians.

However, it later emerged that Mid Sea was the company that brokered the deal and so were entitled to 15% of the sponsorship money.

Further checks, though, revealed that the company did not exist, despite the money already been paid to them as the third party.
