Some concerned residents of in the Obuasi municipality have expressed their frustration after what they describe as unbelievable “bloated budget” of the Obuasi Municipal Assembly’s 2018 annual financial statement.

The group called Concerned Citizens of Obuasi (CCO) believe that the Municipal Chief Executive Officer Mr. Elijah Adansi Bonah and other members of the Assembly are milking what belongs to Obuasi and the country as a whole, after vowing to protect what belongs to them and the country.

According to the group, it doesn’t make sense for a town like theirs which has provided a huge sum of revenue to the country for many years through Gold mining to still be poor.

“We the concern citizens of Obuasi have followed with keen interest the proceedings and discourse surrounding the bad road in the municipality and the 2018 budget review by the Obuasi Municipal Assembly”, leader of the citizens Peter Boakye Kingsford noted during a press conference held in the Municipality.

“The Concern Citizens of Obuasi having to be (sic) privileged to site a copy of the budget finds the amount quoted in some executed contracts to be outrageous”, the statement said.

“Bad road have made driving very unbearable as they have become a death trap for commuters. Drivers have become reluctant to transports market women in their activities creating an economic hardship to people in the community”.

Talking about the bloated contracts, they indicated that a recent fence wall built at the MCE’s residence at a tune of GHc 131,959.

They revealed that construction of the wall was not in the 2018 budget of the assembly and also there was no open tender of such contract making it illegal for the MCE to have carried out such an initiative.

But the youth have found the Presiding Member of the assembly defending the MCE in the unlawful activity.

The youth also stated that a 4.70-kilometer road which could cost GHC 30,000 for reshaping was done within three days cost of GHC 71,312. 40.

Another 4.80 kilometers which could cost, GHC 84,352.40 could cost only GHC 50,000.

These are among many other bloated projects they sighted in their statement, which in their opinion meant ‘corruption’

The youth further called on the president to make sure there is a thorough check by the Auditor General to fish out those milking the municipality.
